what's inspiring us now

A tremendous re-minder to consistently visualize (and talk about!) the experiences you want to create:

What would you do if you won the lottery? Buy a fancy car? That’s what Cynthia Stafford did after cashing in her $112 million ticket. She scooped up two Bentleys—a baby-blue convertible and a bright-orange sedan. Maybe you’d take a first-class trip to Paris? Or hire a personal trainer? Stafford did both.

But she did more than change her lifestyle—she changed her life. What she really wanted was to make movies, so the one-time office worker set out to do just that. Nearly four years later, she heads her own production company. The craziest thing? She predicted every bit of her journey. “I knew I’d get here,” Stafford says, as she sits in the elegant living room of her Los Angeles–area home. “It was just a matter of visualizing it.”

Back in January 2007, Stafford was raising five children and struggling to pay the bills, so she began lulling herself to sleep at night by imagining that she was holding a lottery check. She pictured the exact amount: $112 followed by lots of zeroes. The story seems implausible, and yet Stafford’s steady gaze and positive energy make you believe her, even the bit about knowing what she’d be wearing when she won: a lime-green blouse with a leaf print. “That part kept surprising me,” she says, laughing. “I thought I’d lose weight by then and wouldn’t still have that top.”

But that’s what she was wearing the next Mother’s Day when she learned the $2 ticket she’d bought made her the sole winner in a drawing worth, yes, $112 million. “When I found out, I sat in silence for a minute because it confirmed how powerful our minds can be,” she says with a grin. “ Then I started screaming and crying!”

Stafford had always been generous, even back when she had much less to give. As a 6-year-old, she forked over her allowance to UNICEF, and when her younger brother died in a car crash in 1999, she took in his children: Qumani, now 14; Sigourney, 15; Jahmil, 18; Charmaine, 20; and Presley, 22. Stafford opted to take a $67 million lump-sum payout from the lottery. So, after sharing the prize with her father and older brother, putting away funds for the kids’ education, and making some giddy purchases, she wrote substantial checks to organizations including UNICEF, the Natural Resources Defense Council, God’s Love We Deliver, and Kids in the Spotlight, a local group that teaches filmmaking to low-income and foster children. “I love helping kids bring out their creativity,” she says.

Then she set about fulfilling her own movie-making dreams. Always thinking big, she approached billionaire mogul David Geffen, co-founder of the film company DreamWorks SKG, for guidance. “I wanted the best people around me, but you don’t get that unless you ask,” she says with charming directness. His best advice? “Make good investments,” Stafford says, “because even $67 million can go quickly.” Since their conversation, she has also become actively involved in the Geffen Playhouse, a nonprofit Los Angeles theater.

Says TV producer Gilbert Cates, an adviser of Stafford’s, “Cynthia gets what she wants, and what she wants most is to make a difference. She’s very smart, doesn’t take no for an answer, and she sees only goals where other people might see obstacles.”

In 2009, Stafford launched Queen Nefertari Productions to develop movie and TV projects. Her first film, now in pre-production, is a comedy to be directed by actor Kevin Connolly of HBO’s Entourage. She has also optioned Don DeLillo’s critically acclaimed novel White Noise. “To me, it represents the ultimate challenge as an adaptation,” she says.

Meanwhile, Stafford is busy planning a Beverly Hills wedding to Lanre Idewu, a personal trainer, and outfitting her kids with the latest Wii and Xbox gadgets. Still, you get the feeling that if she lost everything tomorrow, she’d be just fine. “I would simply visualize it again and make it happen,” she says. And you believe her.

making t-rexes on friday

I took Kaemon Ze in to get photos...he hasn't had photos done (professionally) since last July! Here's a shot I took of him while in the waiting room... I know it's blury; that's what I like about it. He's always in motion, it seems. :) (I'll post photos from the shoot soon.)

A while back, we got Kaemon Ze an art storage box. Now that he's amassed a healthy collection of play doughs, crayons, paints, and chalks, we brought out the box to store it all in. Now that he has access to all that (paints, excepted) he's been pulling out the play dough...often. And he wants me to make him t-rexes...every time. Here's a sampling of the small herd I made tonight. I got off easy. :)

Pretending to eat his play dough pancake.

taking daddy's "helper" to the zoo

Today daddy's putting in a new floor...and he has an eager helper.

Ummm...not so helpful, son! Super cute, though!
Let's go to the zoo, son!

JoyBoy's usual hurry to see the crocs (whom I now know are named Lance and Morgan), was delayed by his desire to go in to see the lorikeets. We hadn't done this before, so I was intrigued by his desire. (Above, a guy feeding a lorikeet nectar...from his head.)
We walked all the way through the exhibit, watching some people feed nectar to the birds, then we left. As soon as we exited, Kaemon Ze said he wanted to "hold the birds." So we looped back around to the entrance where I gave him a dollar to give to the lady selling nectar. I told him he had to hold still...so he did. :)

Waiting...patiently for a lorikeet to come enjoy his sweet offering.

There were a few birds perched nearby so I picked JoyBoy up so he could hold his cup to them. Lucky for him, two birds chose to imbibe, thrilling him.

After a shared lunch, JoyBoy runs off some energy. Boy oh boy, is he going to fall asleep fast once we're in the car!

Run, Kaemon Ze, run!

Watching kids interact.

A sleepy polar bear.

Watching the dozing polar bear.

Spying on the polar bears.

The spy hole.

Another spy hole. Fun!

Mountain goat soaking up the rays. Kaemon Ze was already asleep in the stroller by the time we got to him (he's near the entrance/exit). Zzzzzzz

finished reading this...

Brace yourself...I feel a few long sentences coming on.

When you go to bed between 8pm and 9pm (with 9pm being "really late"), to be able to get your bones outta bed at 4am in order to be at the gym before 5am during the week (you know, so that you can be back at the house early enough to spend some morning time with your husband and son before they head off to their day...What? That's not your routine?), you often find yourself up relatively early on the weekends.

Thus began my Saturday. Up before 6am meant I got to finish the book I'd been reading since December (you know, between holidays, partying, sleeping, working out, cleaning, changing diapers, making tyrannosauruses out of play dough - my standing record is nine, by the way). Finishing the book felt like a small achievement.
My impression: The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World is a good read (especially for the working parent who has serious time constraints for leisurely activities such as breathing and reading). The book can be picked up and set down on a whim. It was entertaining and enjoyable. I found myself shaking my head at the author for being such a nit-wit. Yes, you can be book smart but still not see the forest for the trees. He has an extraordinary patient wife.

Book description from the author's site:
The Know-It-All is the story of one man’s quest to learn everything in the world. His method? Reading the Encyclopedia from A to Z. All 44 million words of it. From a-ak (ancient East Asian music) to Zywiec (a town in Poland known for its beer). The book that results is a combination of:

--The most fascinating and funniest facts from the encyclopedia so you’ll never be at a loss at your next cocktail party.

--A series of adventures that test the limits of knowledge (Jacobs sneaks into a Mensa convention and competes on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire).

--The story of how information overload wreaks havoc on Jacobs’ life (his wife started fining him $1 for every irrelevant fact he inserted into conversation).

--A search for profound wisdom among the ocean of facts.

Read more about the author.

Want to read it? I'll pass it along.

it's a cruel and beautiful world

John Garrett: Slipper Basket, 1989
(source)

Life is woven with ribbons that are all at once beautiful, tragic, joyful, sad. This is dedicated to four dear friends: one who faced down fear; one who is so generous; one who just lost her sister; and one who just celebrated the arrival of a new grand-daughter.

Through the elation and the pain, life remains a precious, fleeting gift.
This is a re-minder to live fully, to love fully.

As Mike Midlo sings, "It's a cruel and beautiful world."

pies and quantum physics

So my talented hubby's been busy today, his "Daddy Day" with Kaemon Ze. He cooked, cleaned, took JoyBoy to the pool, got the house ready to receive our new washer, dryer, and refrigerator tomorrow, and scored another compost bin the neighbor's were giving away.

In addition to cooking a wonderful meal of steak, root veggies from the garden, corn (also from the garden) he threw together a pie made with pineapple and cherries. Let me tell you, it was delicious!

After all that, and after dinner, he creates this balloon concoction, and tells me:

"The balloons are a representation of the big bang - the creation of 11 dimensional reality. Five "8's" radiating from a common center node, one of which represents our 3rd dimensional universe and it's antimatter mate. There's more, and black holes fit in there somewhere. But I don't know where yet."

I love this man!

Not related, but super cute...RayRay parked her butt next to the guys.

what inspired me today

what gives?

Why do all the grocery carts (the kind with the ride-in cars for the kids) have this sign on them? I don't get it...maybe next time I'll bug the manager with the question. :)

guys night(s) out

My hubby scored three tickets to see the Blazers play over three weeks! Interestingly enough, most of his guy friends are not interested in sports, but a few are casual followers. Jason saw this as a great opportunity to 1) see a friend he hasn't see in a few years; 2) take his dad; and 3) take a new friend. Here's two photos from the three games he got to see:

my morning love

As I was blow drying my hair this morning, JoyBoy came in and yelled over the noise of the blow dryer,
"I LOVE YOU!!"

He sure makes me laugh.

progress on my LOVE painting

I was able to work on my painting over the weekend... and I really like where it's headed.

My inspiration: when one is confronted with the possibility of love...it's like standing on the edge of a precipice...do you leap and soar? Do... you leap and have your heart crushed? Do you walk away, never knowing?

And this morning, JoyBoy did another number 2 in the potty - whoo hoo!

apologies in advance...

My apologies in advance...it's another potty-training update. :)

Great news! JoyBoy did a big pee in the morning and in the evening, a poo! We are so excited! Whoo hoo!

bruised foot

My friend was telling me about how the tops of her feet were bruised once after her Nia class. Her instructor didn't know why and asked if she was getting enough to drink. No pain associated, just bruising (and that after a semester's worth of classes). Were odd.

I've recently taken up Nia and on my third class (4 weeks apart or so), I noticed bruising on the top of my left foot:

We dance barefoot on a dance floor and my loving hubster thinks it's a broken blood vessel as my feet are not yet used to this kind of movement. It sounds plausible.

our friday

Yesterday I entered JoyBoy into his first art show! It's the same "Love" show that I'm doing. Of course he didn't know that, but he saw the painting that I did last night and this morning he told me he wanted to paint. Yippie! You got it son! He took off with his easel and put it up on the kitchen counter. Guess he knows where he wants to paint!

After a while, he abandoned the brush in favor of a more tactile experience. :)

He showed me his paws and roared at me. :)

His painting...but not done (I hope). Heh!

We cleaned up and headed to the zoo. It was such a great time to be there - no one was there (well, very few people). I even got the front row parking spot! Here's JoyBoy, hanging out with his new bud, the leopard.

Like last time, we were treated to many up-close and personal viewings. I felt really blessed.

Big female.
Bigger male in the background. He was back much further until a zoo keeper walked up and both of the tigers totally perked up and came to say, "hi." Again, I felt blessed to be there.

He's so happy to see the crocs!

A serious "close encounter." Whoa.
I kept waiting for the crock to jump at us.
I would have peed my pants and laughed my patootie off.
But he behaved.

FREAKY. This is the animal that Kaemon Ze wanted to see first.

Again, another close-up. This guy has brown and black stripes.

He had fun brushing the goats.

I'm so enjoying our zoo membership (we just got it). Walking into the zoo and heading down to the crocs made me feel like this is such a part of childhood. There were no zoos where I grew up. I felt so much appreciation that we have this place to see amazing animals. I love that Kaemon Ze gets to experience them... a least until we get to Africa (et al) and see the real deals.
